Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE)

Literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE)

LANTITE Overview

LANTITE is a national requirement for all students enrolled in accredited teacher education programs in Australia. It ensures that graduating teachers have the literacy and numeracy skills needed for professional practice.

The test is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

From 2025, students can attempt each component – literacy and numeracy – as many times as needed. Each attempt incurs a fee:

  • $98 per component

  • $196 for both components.

All students enrolled in a Bachelor of Teaching or Master of Teaching program at Adelaide University must successfully complete both the literacy and numeracy components of LANTITE before enrolling in the final placement course.

Please note: students who commenced their teaching degree in University of Adelaide or University of South Australia must complete LANTITE in accordance with the rules of their original program which may be different to the rules of Adelaide University programs.

It is strongly recommended that you attempt LANTITE as early as possible in your studies. Delaying the test may impact your ability to progress in your degree.

If you fail either the literacy or numeracy component of LANTITE, you can re-sit the test as many times as necessary, as there are now unlimited attempts. You can attempt the test until you pass both components.

We strongly recommend sitting LANTITE as early as possible in your studies. While you have unlimited attempts, delaying the test puts your course progression and graduation at risk.

LANTITE results are valid for the duration of your program. If you fail one or both components, you can continue to reattempt the test until you pass.

As of 2025, there is no longer a limit on the number of attempts for the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE). This change allows students to retake the test as many times as needed to achieve a passing score.

This policy update provides more flexibility for aspiring teachers, reducing pressure and allowing them to continue working toward their qualification without restrictions on the number of attempts.
