Exam rules for invigilated online exams
Before your invigilated online exam
- Make sure you clearly understand the conditions of your exam by reviewing the:
- Examinations Procedure;
- Exam Rules (see below); and
- Understanding the permitted software and materials for your specific exam (as specified by your academic staff member).
Note: Anything not listed is prohibited.
By starting your exam, you confirm that you understand and will follow these requirements. Failure to comply may be treated as a breach of exam conditions and could lead to an academic integrity investigation.
Prepare your exam environment
- Use a private, quiet space free from distractions.
- Ensure your desk and surroundings are clear of clutter and unauthorised materials.
- Turn off all audio devices (TVs, radios, etc.).
- Ensure lighting is bright enough for your webcam to clearly capture your face and surroundings.
- Have a stable power supply and internet connection throughout the exam.
- Remove all digital watches and wearable electronic devices (these are not permitted).
- Remove ear coverings, including headsets, headphones, earbuds, or any headwear that covers your ears.
Food and drink
- Remove food packaging.
- Use clear, unlabelled containers for drinks.
- Stay in view.
- Always remain in view of your webcam.
- Do not leave the room during the exam.
- Have your identity verification ready.
Complete your verification
- Show a clear photo of your student ID or government-issued ID (physical only, no digital licences).
- Show a clear photo of yourself in your exam environment.
- Perform a slow, 360-degree floor-to-ceiling scan of your exam room before starting.
- If you change rooms, repeat the scan and check conditions again.
Mobile phone use
- Only use your phone for multi-factor authentication (MFA) login or for IT support.
- Keep calls on loudspeaker and in view of the webcam.
- Place your phone face down on the desk during the exam.
No communication
Do not speak to or have others present in the room during the exam.
Approved tools only
Use only tools, software, or materials explicitly approved in your exam instructions. This includes:
- No collaboration tools (email, forums, etc.)
- No additional electronic devices.
- No AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT).
- No physical items (pens, paper, calculators).
- No copy/paste functionality or software that retains exam content.
- No third-party assistance.
- Do not use external services or technologies for help. This includes:
- Contract cheating sites (e.g., Chegg)
- Virtual Machines (VMs).
