Advancing sustainable agriculture through innovation and collaboration

WRI drives national innovation through major initiatives including PlantSynBio Australia, Plants4Space, Zero Net Emissions Agriculture, and the Future Crops Development Centre. Collaborations span government, academia, and industry to advance sustainable agriculture, resilient crops, and bio-manufacturing. Additional projects with Coopers Brewery and partners enhance low-input malting and sustainable wine production.

Dryland agriculture

PlantSynbio

The WRI supported the establishment of the Plant Synthetic Biology Australia (PSBA) network in 2024 through a $20M Commonwealth investment under NCRIS and managed by Bioplatforms Australia. Co-investment was also generously provided by the State Government of South Australia. PBSA provides national infrastructure and expertise to accelerate advances in plant science, agriculture, and sustainable bio-manufacturing. PSBA will have nodes at Adelaide University, Australian National University, La Trobe, and University of Western Australia.

ARC Plants 4 Space Centre of Excellence

WRI supported the bid for the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Plants for Space (P4S) which commenced in January 2024 and was officially launched in October 2024 at the Centre’s inaugural annual conference. WRI continues to support the P4S Centre and its commitment to advancing research in growing plants in extreme environments, future foods and bioproduction.

Controlled environment agriculture

Zero net emissions agriculture

WRI supported the OzMedicago Project, a new national research initiative to develop next-generation pasture legumes with the potential to cut agricultural methane emissions and boost farm sustainability. Project partners include the South Australian Research and Development Institute – the research arm of Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA-SARDI) and the SARDI-curated Australian Pastures Genebank (APG), the Australian Plant Phenomics Network (APPN), Bioplatforms Australia (BPA), the Australian Wine Research Institute and Metabolomics Australia.

ARC Future Crops Development Centre training centre

WRI supported the establishment of the ARC Training Centre for Accelerated Future Crops Development (FCD), a collaboration between the Australian National University and Adelaide University, government agencies and key stakeholders in the Australian grains industry involved in training, R&D, social engagement, responsible innovation, breeding, marketing, and delivery.

Adelaide University and Coopers Brewery low-input malt laboratory

The Waite Research Institute and Coopers Brewery have teamed up to make beer production more sustainable through the establishment of the Adelaide University and Coopers Brewery (UACB) Low-input Malt Laboratory.

The devastating effects of climate change - from food insecurity and environmental degradation to natural disasters like fires and floods - are driving international efforts to improve industrial sustainability. Researchers at the Waite Research Institute are focusing on the environmental impacts associated with the malting and brewing industries. Joining forces with Coopers Brewery and plant-breeding research company Australian Grain Technologies (AGT), the researchers aim to make beer production both more sustainable and less expensive.

No and low alcohol wine research facility (NOLO)

Low and No Alcohol Wine Facility – Waite Campus

This world-first trial-scale facility supports South Australian winemakers in creating premium low and no alcohol wines. A collaboration between the University of Adelaide, the Australian Wine Research Institute, and the SA Government, and supported by WRI, it enables small-batch production and market testing, helping position the region as a global leader in NOLO innovation.
