Partner with industry and drive innovation

Engaging with industry as part of your research degree strengthens your academic experience and gives you a competitive edge in your future career.

As an industry-engaged graduate researcher at Adelaide University, you will collaborate with industry leaders to design innovative research projects that address real-world problems. You will connect with an experienced industry mentor across the duration of your degree and have the opportunity to develop your research skills and sector business knowledge through a research internship. Moreover, you will undertake career-specific training and professional development through Adelaide University’s Graduate Research & Innovation Training (GRIT) program.

In addition to the University identifying opportunities for you, we also welcome you to work with your supervisors to identify your own industry-engagement opportunities.

Key aspects of an industry-engaged PhD

Industry-engaged graduate research projects allow graduate researchers at Adelaide University to collaborate with a partner organisation on research and development throughout the duration of their candidature, with the option of undertaking an industry internship during the degree. The combination of sector-relevant research and internship opportunities provides an invaluable opportunity for graduate research students to engage with real world problems as part of their research journey.

Industry-engaged research degrees are open to applicants from all research areas who are eligible for onshore study in Australia and meet the entry requirements for a PhD at Adelaide University, including English language requirements for your chosen discipline. Some additional conditions may apply. We encourage you to explore the individual projects listed and speak with the Adelaide University Graduate Research School about your interest.

Adelaide University, in conjunction with an industry partner, offers successful candidates a minimum 3.5-year (full-time equivalent) major scholarship (equivalent to the University’s RTPS rate or higher). Additionally, for some projects, our partners provide a supplementary scholarship and/or additional funding for travel or research. Please see the advertised projects for more detail.

Alongside their University supervisory panel, industry-engaged PhD students will be connected with an experienced industry mentor, who will provide specialist guidance on the project across the duration of candidature.

Graduate researchers at Adelaide University benefit from a specially tailored program of professional development activities directed by the University’s Graduate Research & Innovation Training (GRIT) program. Selected GRIT courses and activities may focus on intellectual property, management/leadership, collaboration, entrepreneurship, research commercialisation and participation in the University’s 3MT competition. Additionally, all graduate research students embarking on a research internship receive preparatory training for their placement. Additional activities may include networking events, attendance at industry meetings, professional association meetings, seminars and conferences.

Getting started with industry-engaged graduate research

You are welcome to apply for an industry-engaged research degree if you have relevant qualifications and experience in your field. Adelaide University also encourages expressions of interest from experienced industry professionals who are ready to take the next step in their research journey. If you are unsure about your eligibility for a specific project or if you have your own industry partner or project, reach out to the Graduate Research School’s Industry team.

Your industry-engaged PhD will follow the same academic milestones as any other research degree at Adelaide University. If your program includes a Research Internship, you will need to complete a minimum three-month, or 60-day full-time equivalent, placement with your industry partner.

International graduate research students are encouraged to apply. Please keep in mind that some industry partners may have specific eligibility requirements and/or restrictions for international candidates.

You can complete your research internship on a full-time or part-time basis; for example, you can do so 1–2 days per week, providing you meet the required 60-day placement duration.

To be part of the program, organisations must meet the Australian Government’s definition of a research end-user. This typically includes businesses, government departments, NGOs and community organisations. It does not include research institutes or other universities. If you are unsure whether a potential partner qualifies, contact the Graduate Research Industry Engagement Team for advice.

If your research internship extends your PhD beyond the standard 3.5-year timeframe, Adelaide University will provide up to three additional months of funding at the standard Adelaide University scholarship rate (pro rata). Please note that any supplementary scholarships you receive won’t continue beyond the standard completion period.
