Supporting your growth as a researcher

At Adelaide University, we are committed to helping you become a skilled, confident and well-rounded researcher, ready for a career in academia or beyond.

The Graduate Research & Innovation Training (GRIT) program is a core part of your research degree. It supports your development from enrolment through to thesis submission and beyond, helping you build the skills and confidence to succeed in your research and future career.

What GRIT offers you

GRIT gives you access to a wide range of development opportunities and experiences designed to:

  • Broaden your research training experience
  • Expand your technical and professional skillset
  • Support your career goals
  • Connect you with peers and ease your transition into graduate research life

Participation in GRIT is compulsory for all PhD and Master of Philosophy students. However, all graduate research students are welcome to take part in GRIT activities.

To graduate, you will need to meet the GRIT program requirements before submitting your thesis.

A flexible framework for your development

GRIT includes four fixed activities to ensure every graduate researcher receives the information they need to succeed and understands their rights and responsibilities at Adelaide University.

Beyond these, you will choose activities that suit your individual development needs. These are mapped to three Researcher Development Domains, giving you flexibility while ensuring your training supports both your goals and the University’s research ambitions.

The University offers a variety of training and development opportunities that align to the GRIT framework and will also recognise training and development activities you undertake independently throughout your research program.

GRIT Online

GRIT Online is your hub for managing your development. You can:

  • Reflect on your development needs
  • Browse and book activities
  • Track your progress
  • Upload evidence of completed activities

Transitioning from a foundation university

If you began your research degree at the University of Adelaide or the University of South Australia, here is what you need to know:

You only need to participate in GRIT if you were required to complete the Career and Research Skills Training (CaRST) program. Your existing CaRST activities have been mapped to the GRIT framework and recognised for GRIT credit.

You must continue completing eligible activities until you meet the GRIT requirements for your degree.

If you did not complete the online Postgraduate Research Induction course or the Research Integrity course at the University of Adelaide, you will need to complete the Adelaide University versions.

If you were granted an exemption from CaRST, you are also exempt from GRIT. If you have already completed CaRST then you don’t need to take further action for GRIT.

Once you have met your GRIT requirements you are still welcome – and encouraged – to continue taking part in GRIT activities to support your development.

You are not required to participate in GRIT as a compulsory activity. However, if you did not complete your Orientation and Induction milestones or the Research Integrity module at UniSA, you will need to complete the equivalent Adelaide University courses.

Even if GRIT is not compulsory for you, you are welcome – and encouraged – to take part in GRIT activities to support your development.
