Our research drives change to improve environmental and social sustainability

The Environment Institute co-creates transformational multidisciplinary research programs and projects together with partners to achieve real world outcomes.

Latest projects

Biodiversity, environmental change and restoration

Innovative models and advances in sedimentary ancient DNA and bulk-bone metabarcoding are identifying where to reintroduce Australia’s most threatened species and restore habitat, now and under future climate conditions.

Sustainable marine futures

The largest oyster reef restoration project in the Southern Hemisphere is using pioneering approaches, including underwater speakers, to replicate the cues baby oysters use to find a healthy habitat, dramatically improving reef regeneration.

People, nature, climate

Investigating the ways in which Indigenous knowledge can complement and inform Western scientific approaches will have transformative benefits for biodiversity and climate change adaptation, creating spaces for Indigenous voices to be represented within them.

Climate and environmental risk

Research into “law reform for a fire-ready future” will play a vital role in informing practical pathways for law reform, assisting policy makers to enact improved fire prevention and supporting communities, agencies and ecosystems.

Green urban futures and planetary health

Climate change and its impact on population health: a comprehensive research program is underway to better understand the impacts of heatwaves – particularly on vulnerable populations – and drive community resilience.

Pollutants and emerging contaminants

PFAS contamination is a global health risk. Complete breakdown of these forever chemicals has been achieved - a critical step toward safer communities and cleaner ecosystems.
