DSI partners with industry, government and our communities to solve complex challenges and strengthen national resilience. Through collaborative research, education, innovation, and engagement, we bring together expertise and ideas to advance security, build sovereign capability, and create opportunities that benefit Australia and the global community.

  • Joint research & development: Collaborate with us on cutting-edge projects that address defence, security and sovereign capability gaps.
  • Commercialisation & knowledge transfer: Leverage University-led innovations, infrastructure and intellectual property to bring technologies to market.
  • Workforce development: Engage in training, internships or co-supervised student projects to cultivate talent in defence, security, and emerging tech fields.
  • Consultancy & capability support: Access our expertise in areas like quantum, AI, radar, CBRN for problem-solving, advisory work, feasibility studies or prototyping.
  • Sovereign capability partnerships: Partner to build national resilience through local capability: joint labs, centres, or long-term strategic programs aimed at developing sovereign systems.

DSI collaborates closely with the defence industry to address national research and education gaps, strengthening Australia’s defence capability.

By offering researchers an environment strengthened by major investment and close industry connections, DSI develops a highly skilled workforce capable of delivering practical, impactful defence solutions.

We encourage talented students to consider defence as a career path and provides engaging, fulfilling, and rewarding reasons to stay in this sector, with the goal of boosting retention rates and addressing the critical global shortage of highly skilled and specialised professionals needed to meet Australia’s future security challenges.

The complex nature of the challenges in the defence industry often demands contributions from multiple perspectives, combined in new and innovative ways. In partnership with Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and other partners we have established 3 Centres for Advanced Defence Research (CADR) in Australia and work in close partnership with other institutes and centres.

  • Centre for Advanced Defence Research in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (CADR RAS)
  • Centre for Advanced Defence Research in High-Frequency Technologies (CADR HFT)
  • Centre for Defence Communications and Information Networking (CDCIN)
  • Centre for Radiation Research Education and Innovation (CRREI)
  • Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS)
  • Research Unit on Military Law and Ethics (RUMLAE)
  • Social Science and Intelligence Research Network (SSIReN)
  • Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group (NSSG)
