Welcome to Biological Services

Supporting the biomedical research community through the delivery of best practice and world-standard laboratory animal products and services.

Animal Ethics Committees (AECs)

Biological Services is committed to the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (the Code), ensuring the ethical, humane, and responsible treatment of animals used in research and teaching. All University personnel who wish to use animals for teaching, research or experimentation must obtain ethical approval from Adelaide University’s Animal Ethics Committees prior to any use or involvement with animals, irrespective of where they are located, where animals may be housed or used, or the source of funding.

For more information about guidelines, applications, and approvals, please visit Animal Ethics Committee.

The role of the Adelaide University Veterinarians

The University Veterinarians’ work is responsible for overseeing the health and welfare of all animals involved in research or teaching across all University campuses, as approved by the University’s Animal Ethics Committees.

The University Veterinarians work closely with, but are independent of, Biological Services. They provide support and veterinary assistance to all animal users in the University, including wildlife, companion animal, laboratory animal and production animal researchers and educators. Whilst the University Veterinarians oversee this area, we all have a responsibility towards animal welfare.

For more information about the role of University Veterinarians (formerly Animal Welfare Officers) and contact details, please visit Animal Welfare.

Laboratory Animal Services (LAS)

Laboratory Animal Services (LAS) is a team of dedicated animal technicians who support Adelaide University’s biomedical research community through the delivery of best practice animal husbandry and the provision of world standard laboratory animal products and services, whilst maintaining a commitment to the principles of the “Australian Code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (8th Edition 2013)”.

Core Animal Facility (CAF)

The Core Animal Facility promotes a culture of respect for animals, technicians, and researchers. We provide high quality services to support groundbreaking research and best practice in animal welfare.

About Biological Services

Biological Services brings together the expertise and resources of two foundation universities into one unified operation, strengthening our commitment to excellence in biomedical research support. While uniting under a single purpose, we proudly maintain two key facilities, Laboratory Animal Services, and the Core Animal Facility — ensuring continuity of world-class care, welfare standards, and research support. Together, these facilities deliver best practice in animal husbandry, training, and ethical research compliance, supporting researchers with high-quality laboratory animal products, housing, and technical expertise. This integration enhances efficiency, collaboration, and innovation, allowing us to better serve the research community while upholding the highest standards of integrity, quality, and animal welfare.
