The Centre for Augmented Reasoning (CAR) is a four-year $20 million investment by the Department of Education in people and research to develop the high-calibre machine learning expertise Australia needs to be an active participant in the machine learning-enabled global economy.

Building on the University’s existing research strengths at AIML, the centre supports high performance machine learning research, providing valuable scholarship opportunities, supporting AI commercialisation initiatives, and becoming a leading voice in Australia’s AI landscape.

The Centre is focused on four distinct research themes:

  • Theme 1: Next generation machine learning
  • Theme 2: Interactive machine learning
  • Theme 3: Knowledge, representation, and generalisation
  • Theme 4: Machine learning-driven science discovery

The CommBank Centre for Foundational AI Research was born of the largest investment in AI of any company in Australia. It aims to position South Australia as a leader in foundational AI research, developing cutting-edge machine learning techniques with real-world applications across industries such as finance and national security. CommBank will harness these innovations to enhance customer security and create more personalised banking experiences. The five-year partnership will further enhance the research and education offerings at AIML.

The Centre aims to keep Australia at the forefront of foundational machine learning and AI innovation, creating a competitive edge in harnessing AI technology. The partnership will foster foundational research into new machine learning methods and techniques and explore real-world applications in finance and other industries.

The Centre is focused on three distinct research themes:

  • Theme 1: Bias, trust, and attribution in deploying reliable AI models
  • Theme 2: Responsible reasoning and forecasting in deep learning
  • Theme 3: Scalable and resource-efficient models for large-scale AI

Launched in 2024, AIML’s Industrial AI Program is funded by the Government of South Australia to support the development of core capability in industrial AI, driving economic growth and job creation in South Australia and across the nation in a range of sectors.

The primary focus of AIML’s Industrial AI Program is to:

  • increase the development and adoption of AI to create jobs and boost productivity.
  • grow and attract world-class talent and expertise to SA.
  • harness AIML’s world-leading AI capabilities to solve national challenges and benefit all Australians.
  • ensure industrial AI technologies are responsible, inclusive, and reflect Australian values.

As one of its key initiatives, the Industrial AI SME Grant Program aims to support South Australian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to adopt AI by providing them with access to machine engineering expertise from our Industry Solutions team.

The Responsible AI Research (RAIR) Centre is a landmark collaboration of experts from Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, and Adelaide University, in partnership with the South Australian Government.

The RAIR Centre places Australia at the global forefront of research into safe and responsible artificial intelligence.

RAIR is committed to developing fundamental responsible AI research at the right scale to have impact at both a national and international level by combining the Software Engineering for AI (SE4AI) strength of CSIRO’s Data61 with AIML’s strength in machine learning research and translation.

The Centre is focused on four distinct research themes:

  • Theme 1: Tackling misinformation
  • Theme 2: Safe AI in the real world
  • Theme 3: AI system evaluation for safety
  • Theme 4: Causal AI for a changing world

Project CANAIRI (Collaboration for trANslational Artificial Intelligence tRIals) was established in 2024 as an initiative focused on developing guidance for the silent evaluation phase of AI translation efforts at local health settings. This initiative is co-led by Dr Melissa McCradden and Dr Xiao Liu in partnership with 24 academic, regulatory and industry organisations across 4 different countries.

Project CANAIRI’s mission is to provide actionable, ethics-forward evidence-based guidance for health settings to conduct these silent phase evaluations. We will work to ensure this guidance is accessible and practical for anyone – from the largest academic health centre to the smallest community hospital. We will connect with experts, stakeholders, and consumers across the world to hear from them about what they think is important, what barriers they’re facing, and where we need to go as a global community to facilitate better translation through local evaluations.

AIML shop is an initiative of the Centre for Augmented Reasoning (CAR), a Department of Education funded Centre. The program is designed to enhance the global impact of AIML's world-class research by making advanced tools, such as machine learning models and software solutions, more accessible and reliable for industry adoption. This effort not only promotes the practical application of research but also supports AIML researchers and engineers in expanding their entrepreneurship skills and creating a track record of product development.

By fostering entrepreneurialism within the research community, AIML Shop aims to create a sustainable revenue stream that rewards innovation, supports future commercialisation efforts, and solidifies AIML's position as a leader in translating academic research into real-world solutions.
