Supporting healthier lives through healthier living

The Alliance for Research in Exercise, Nutrition and Activity (ARENA) is a research centre investigating the role of exercise, nutrition, and other lifestyle activities in improving clinical and health outcomes. Physical, psychological and sports performance in populations is studied across a wide cross-section of society, ranging from children to elite athletes and people with chronic disease.

Our research focus of ‘Healthy lives through healthy living’ centres around the grand challenge of tackling the growing epidemic of chronic diseases. We focus on real-world issues and bring bold ideas to create solutions which optimise health, function, and wellbeing.

Our mission is to be the leading Australian voice on a global stage by championing research in exercise, nutrition, preventative health, and other lifestyle behaviours across the lifespan. To do this, we work with diverse research partners, end-users, and our communities to identify and evaluate solutions, and translate these outcomes into products and changes in policy and practice.

We work to understand how exercise, nutrition and daily activity can prevent disease and promote lifelong health. Our research is organised across three core themes:

Training person icon

Exercise

We design and test exercise approaches that improve health and performance and prevent or manage chronic disease.

Focus areas:

  • Exercise physiology and cardiometabolic health
  • Rehabilitation, falls prevention and healthy ageing
  • Strength, conditioning, and sport performance
  • Workplace and clinical exercise interventions
  • Neuromuscular control, motor learning, and fatigue

Nutrition

We generate evidence on diets, food environments and interventions that support health and performance across life stages.

Focus areas:

  • Public health nutrition and behaviour change
  • Metabolic health, weight management, and chronic disease
  • Nutrition for pregnancy, infancy, and childhood
  • Performance nutrition for athletes and active populations
  • Food systems, sustainability, and culturally responsive nutrition

Activity

We measure everyday movement (including sedentary time and sleep) and how environments shape health, wellbeing, and disease risk.

Focus areas:

  • Physical activity, sedentary time, and sleep (24-hour behaviours)
  • Children’s movement, cognition, and development
  • Chronic disease prevention and management
  • Physical activity for cognitive health and dementia prevention
  • Active communities, parks, and urban design
  • Digital health, wearables, and behaviour-change technologies

ARENA’s research informs healthier choices, environments and policies that help people live well at every stage of life.

ARENA is committed to advancing research that enhances health, wellbeing, and performance across the lifespan.

We have a growing list of achievements, and ongoing contributions to the fields of physical activity, nutrition, health technology, and healthy ageing. Our work informs programs, policies and practices that help people live healthier, more active lives.

Some examples of our community engagement and impact include:

  • Events: We bring our community of collaborators together through dedicated forums, seminars, and community engagement events - The South Australian Healthy Lifestyle State Research Forum, public seminars on dementia risk reduction, and regional outreach events.
  • Media engagement: As part of our focus on access, our health and lifestyle research is communicated with the broader public across national and international media platforms through a variety of traditional and digital channels, reaching millions of people each year.
  • Podcast: Our ARENA-led podcast series shares actionable, evidence-based guidance and discussion on topics like healthy ageing, daily movement, athletic performance, and nutrition across the lifespan, extending our reach beyond academic channels.
  • Policy and guidelines: Evidence from ARENA researchers informs national and state frameworks for physical activity, nutrition, workplace wellbeing, and school health programs, including evaluations of activity/screentime policy in out-of-school-hours care, and guidance supporting workplace wellbeing and community activity.
  • Community and public health: We co-design and evaluate programs with government and community partners, such as outdoor fitness initiatives with local councils, state-wide school and youth sport projects, and regional healthy ageing activities - to improve movement, diet quality, and participation.
  • Clinical and healthcare practice: ARENA-developed exercise and nutrition approaches are integrated into rehabilitation and chronic disease management and support cognitive health and dementia prevention through time-use, sleep, and activity interventions.
  • Technology and innovation: We develop and validate practical digital tools (apps, wearables, and data-driven platforms) to monitor activity, sleep and diet, and support behaviour change in real-world settings.
