He is also a Chief Investigator of ARC Training Centre for Smart and Sustainable Horticulture and ARC Research Hub for Intelligent Energy Efficiency in Future Protected Cropping. Prof. Chen obtained his BSc from Zhejiang University and PhD from University of Tasmania (2008). He was the Education Director of National Vegetable Protected Cropping Centre, Deputy Program 2 Leader of CRC Future Food Systems, and Associate Dean Engagement & International at Western Sydney University. He has internationally recognized research excellence in agriculture, horticulture, plant science and evolutionary biology. His research interests are in 1.) stomatal regulation, heat, drought and salinity tolerance in barley, wheat and rice and their wild relatives, 2.) Molecular genomic evolution, multi-omics, and spatial omics for abiotic stress tolerance in crops, 3.) Improving horticultural vegetable production, quality, energy efficiency, and resource sustainability in protected cropping, and 4.) Genome sequencing, functional genomics, and physiology of fern species. He published over 280 papers with many of them on top tier journals and was a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2023 and 2024. Prof. Chen has been generously supported by grants from the ARC, Hort Innovation, CRC, GRDC, and CRDC and received a range of research, teaching and engagement national and international awards. He is the Editor in Chief for Plant Growth Regulation and Associate Editor for Plant Physiology. Prof. Chen is a regular reviewer for over 100 international journals and serves as an international expert for major funding bodies of 14 developed countries. He was a member of Australian Council of Deans for Agriculture and Committee of ACICIS Study Indonesia.
