Profile of Jacob Maher

About me

I am researcher with the Wildlife Crime Research Hub investigating illegal activities impacting native Australian flora. This work evaluates the risks and historical impacts of crime and environmental harm towards plants. The project contributes to understanding ecological, legal, and monitoring challenges associated with wildlife crime. My PhD research was on invasive plant ecology and how online trade acts as an introduction and dispersal pathway.

My professional background spans ecological research, biosecurity, and applied conservation and restoration, supported by hands-on experience in environmental education and community engagement. Much of my work focuses on translating complex ecological and botanical concepts into clear, engaging, and accessible communication for diverse audiences.

I have teaching experience across ecology and botany including conducting remote field trips, demonstrating survey techniques, teaching plant identification, and supporting undergraduates with study design. I have supervised honours students and delivered workshops for both professional audiences and school students.

Committee member of the Biology Society of South Australia
