Profile of Andrew Lymn-Penning

About me

I am a Lecturer in Architecture and PhD candidate at Adelaide University, teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate architecture programs. My PhD, Immersivity and Fidelity: Architecture, Design and Game Engines, explores how game design thinking and game-engine technologies can support architectural design and education.

This research informs my teaching and underpins my work on SiteSeer, a desktop-based virtual construction site developed with architects, game designers, and university colleagues. SiteSeer is used to support construction literacy, design communication, and access to site-based learning where physical site visits are limited.

My broader teaching and research interests include immersive learning environments, generative AI-supported workflows, and curriculum design. I aim to create learning environments that are structured, inclusive, and supportive, encouraging students to experiment, ask questions, and develop confidence in architectural thinking and practice.

Lecturer in Architecture
Adelaide University + University of South Australia | 2018 – Present
I teach and coordinate architecture studios and core subjects across design, communication, and technology. My role includes course coordination, curriculum development, and working closely with teaching teams to deliver clear, well-structured learning experiences across large student cohorts.

Graduate of Architecture
Das Studio | 2019 – 2021
Worked across projects from early design through to documentation, which continues to inform my teaching in construction, detailing, and architectural communication.

Designer / Co-Director
BIGBUOYS | 2020 – 2024
Delivered graphic, exhibition, and digital design projects for university and private clients, maintaining a close connection to contemporary design practice.

I teach across multiple year levels in the Bachelor and Master of Architectural Design, with a particular focus on first-year transition, studio learning, and design communication. My teaching emphasises clarity, structured progression, and practical skills that support students as they develop confidence and independence in their work.I integrate research into teaching through immersive digital tools, game-engine environments, and contemporary workflows, helping students understand architecture as both a creative and technical discipline. I place strong value on transparency in assessment, constructive feedback, and creating a supportive studio culture that encourages experimentation and learning through doing.
