Driving a smarter, connected transportation future

From emission reduction and major infrastructure to intelligent transport systems and mobility innovation, the future of transport is about travelling and moving goods in ways that are smarter, cleaner and safer.

At Adelaide University, we’re focused on advancing technologies in transport that maximise efficiency, create high-value jobs, build industries and support a dynamic, future-ready economy that’s anchored in collaborative innovation. As a key enabler of a more intelligent, connected and sustainable transport future, we partner with industry, government and community to deliver research and collaborations that have measurable impact.

Our multidisciplinary approach connects partners to researchers from a range of fields, including urban and regional planning, civil and mechanical engineering, mathematics and IT, product and industrial design, business, law and economics, and social sciences.

What we do and how we partner

Our research spans the transport and mobility ecosystem, whether that’s exploring autonomous vehicles, drones and intelligent transport systems or road, rail, maritime and active mobility. We provide opportunities to collaborate and deliver benefits through a variety of transportation projects:

  • Transport safety and infrastructure: guidance on road design, infrastructure planning, crash analytics, road user behaviour, and the deployment of intelligent transport systems including vehicle systems engineering, civil infrastructure resilience and environmental planning.
  • Mobility systems, behaviour and policy: expert data analytics, inclusion, and regional planning for transport system design that is equitable, efficient, and evidence-basedevidence based. This includes public transport, active travel and e-mobility, and integration of social policy, urban health and social determinants of mobility.
  • Freight, logistics and supply chain optimisation: combining industrial AI, systems engineering, and business innovation to improve movement of goods across regional, national, and global networks, circular economy approaches, sustainable logistics, and international trade.
  • Sustainable and low-carbon transport: drawing on strengths in biofuels, hydrogen, and renewable energy integration to decarbonise transport and help achieve South Australia’s net-zero ambitions, supported by research in environmental governance, sustainability transitions and resource regulation.
  • Regional and urban planning: integrating spatial analytics, policy research and infrastructure design to shape transport networks that strengthen regional connectivity and create more liveable, sustainable cities.
  • Simulation and digital twins: advanced modelling, data analytics and digital twin technologies to simulate, test and optimise transport systems to enhance safety, efficiency, and environmental performance.
  • Design-led innovation and human factors: human-centred design, ergonomics, and participatory co-design for intuitive, inclusive and responsive transport technologies and infrastructure, and ethical dimensions of technology, social values and cultural perspectives on mobility.
  • Policy regulation and governance: environmental regulation, transport and resource law, and international relations to support fair, transparent and effective policy frameworks that underpin global sustainability goals.
  • AI-driven predictive analytics for road safety and network optimisation
  • Decarbonising freight and logistics through low carbon fuels and energy-efficient design
  • Designing equitable and accessible transport systems for urban and regional communities, promoting inclusion, health and sustainability
  • Human-technology interaction in automated and connected vehicles
  • Testing renewable biofuel performance in heavy transport and aviation applications
  • Design and optimisation of electrified vehicle fleet charging systems and energy infrastructure towards net zero mining
