Building a thriving future for arts, culture and tourism

Creativity is at the heart of South Australia’s identity, from world-class festivals and arts organisations to regional studios and community spaces where imagination and collaboration thrive. It is expressed in museums and public places, on film sets and immersive digital spaces, and through community arts, youth programs and regional projects that connect people and place. It also underpins the rich tourism experiences that share our state’s culture with the world.

At Adelaide University, we bring together researchers, artists, designers, architects and cultural partners to explore how creativity, design, architecture, tourism and policy strengthen communities and support sustainable futures across urban, regional and remote contexts.

We champion collaboration, cultural exchange and work that deepens how we live, learn and connect. Our approach is grounded in First Nations knowledge, storytelling and ways of working that enrich our understanding of place and belonging.

What we do and how we partner

We recognise that culture is more than an industry.

At Adelaide University, we work alongside South Australia’s creative community to explore how design, architecture, planning, tourism, visual arts, creative technology, music, communications, journalism, event management and culture connect people and place, fostering collaboration, innovation, place and belonging across South Australia, and globally.

By collaborating with community, industry and government we deliver initiatives and projects that deliver meaningful, purpose-driven outcomes.

  • Creative and cultural research: exploring how creativity and culture shape people, places and economies through storytelling, data, community engagement and impact evaluation, and informing policy and strategy to support sustainable creative industries, equitable growth and inclusive participation in Australia’s cultural economy.
  • Tourism and place: partnering with industry, government and communities to design visitor experiences that celebrate culture, heritage and identity.
  • Architecture and the built environment: reimagining buildings, landscape, cities, regions and precincts to support sustainable development, healthy and resilient communities.
  • Design innovation: applying design-led, co-design and human-centred approaches to solve complex challenges and imagine more equitable, sustainable futures.
  • First Nations leadership and cultural knowledge: using design-led, practice-based research to address complex challenges through creativity, technology and human-centred design.
  • Digital futures, data, AI and immersive technologies: using AR, VR, digital interactive and immersive media to transform storytelling, learning, wellbeing and tourism experiences and examining how technology, AI and data are reshaping creative practice and cultural policy, exploring both technical innovation and ethical implications.
  • Place-based research and precinct activation: collaborating with industry and community to revitalise cultural and precincts, activating places that foster connection, creativity and local identity.
  • Arts, music and creative practice: advancing music, visual and performing arts that connect heritage, experimentation and community expression.
  • Humanities, language and ethics: drawing on literature, history, philosophy, anthropology and ethnography to explore identity, culture and the ethics of creative and social change.
  • Analysing workforce trends and sustainability across Australia’s creative and cultural sectors
  • Supporting Kaurna language revitalisation through open-access digital learning resources and community engagement
  • Using design thinking to prototype new service models in health, ageing and community wellbeing
  • Partnering with councils to reimagine public spaces and precincts as vibrant cultural destinations
  • Capturing the social and economic value of arts and culture through data-driven storytelling and evaluation
  • Developing immersive digital environments and AR/VR experiences to enhance cultural engagement and design decision-making
