Transforming Futures Scholarship

Impact of Giving

Removing barriers and transforming lives

Transforming Futures Scholarships ensure education remains accessible for outstanding students of high academic merit, particularly those from rural or remote areas, challenging financial circumstances, or other forms of disadvantage. These scholarships are one of the most influential ways you can support our students, helping them overcome the obstacles that might otherwise prevent them from achieving their study and career aspirations.

More than just easing financial stress, these funds provide students with the freedom to focus on their studies, pursue their dreams, and build a future they once thought impossible.

An endowed scholarship, the Transforming Futures Scholarship is a lifeline for high-achieving students experiencing disadvantage. Your gift today will have a direct and lasting impact – transforming lives by opening doors to education and empowering the next generation of leaders.

Lucas’s story

“After high school, I took a gap year and worked three jobs to save enough money to move from my hometown in the Riverland and pursue my dream of working in the Australian space industry,” Lucas said.

When he found out he’d been awarded a scholarship, Lucas’s relief was overwhelming.

“It has significantly eased the financial burden of relocating to Adelaide and allows me to wholeheartedly focus on my studies,” he said.

Lucas’s story is one of perseverance and sacrifice, and he is working tirelessly to make his dream a reality. When Lucas graduates, he will be the first in his family to earn a university qualification. His journey is a reminder of the importance of support – with a scholarship to help pave the way, he’s determined to make the most of every opportunity, and his future is now brighter than ever.

“I am grateful for all the people who donated to the scholarship, which is giving me the chance to complete my studies. Their support truly makes a difference."

Agnes’s story

"Growing up in Mount Gambier it was always clear to me that regional healthcare was under-resourced and underfunded. Asthma frequently landed me in the hospital, where I encountered various challenges: from being admitted to the adult ICU ward due to limited space in the children’s ward and enduring month-long waits to see a doctor, to traveling to Adelaide for surgery. The lack of staff and resources at hospitals in the country really impacted my family and me," Agnes said.

“I am now driven to work in rural and regional communities and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives while helping to reduce the shortage of healthcare workers.

“It is an honour to have received the Scholarship, and I am extremely grateful for the donors who made this possible.

“Despite working two jobs during my gap year post high school to fund my university studies, the expense of relocating from country South Australia and living away from the family home was challenging," she said.

“The Scholarship has allowed me to fully immerse myself in university life, dedicating more time to my studies and eliminating the stress of financial burdens.”

History

The Transforming Futures Scholarship is the coming together of two invaluable and similar scholarship offerings from the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia – the Augustus Short Scholarship and the University of South Australia General Scholarship.

The Augustus Short Scholarship from the University of Adelaide was established in 2002 as the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship. In 2014, in celebration of Dr Augustus Short – the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Adelaide – the scholarship was renamed to the Augustus Short Scholarship.

The University of South Australia Scholarship, launched in 2016, was built on five pillars with equity and excellence being at the forefront.
