Improve the health and wellbeing of patients with heart rhythm disorders

The Centre for Heart Rhythm Disorders at Adelaide University is at the forefront of developing new and innovative approaches to heart problems and patient care initiatives in Australia and internationally.

Heart disease (which includes rhythm disorders) is a leading cause of death in Australia and internationally, impacting millions of lives and driving an urgent need for new discoveries.

Our team of researchers are advancing knowledge of heart disease with a focus on atrial fibrillation, lifestyle and risk factor management. Their ground-breaking work has earned national and international recognition through numerous awards.

Your gift today will help to further expand our important research, which will ultimately benefit everyone at risk and/or undergoing treatment for heart rhythm disorders.

Why research is needed

  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is estimated to affect more than 500,000 Australians, making it one of the most common arrhythmias
  • AF is responsible for about one in four strokes
  • In Australia there are roughly 1,100 hospitalisations per day due to heart disease
  • Heart disease (which includes rhythm disorders) remains a leading cause of death in Australia
  • In Australia someone dies of heart disease every 18 minutes approximately, which accounts for about 17.1% of all deaths
  • Increased research can lead to early detection, better management, lifestyle/risk factor interventions, new treatments that reduce suffering, reduced deaths and reduced healthcare costs

Our research focus

  • Understanding why cardiac arrhythmias occur, and working on better ways to treat them via scientific and clinical pathways
  • Exploring the relationship between atrial fibrillation, blood clotting and stroke
  • Assessing the burden of cardiac arrhythmia in the community and the health system
  • Understanding the patient experience and providing targeted education to improve quality of life
