The Brookman Building, opened in 1903, is named after Sir George Brookman, a well-known South Australian businessman. It was originally built to house the South Australian School of Mines and Industries. Over time, this institution became part of the University of South Australia in 1991, and later joined Adelaide University in 2026.
The library is named the David Murray Library, in honour of Sir David Murray—a respected merchant and parliamentarian—who made a generous donation to help establish it.
