The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library (BHPML) was established by the University of South Australia in December 1997 and is the archival repository for papers, photographs, gifts, memorabilia and audio-visual materials belonging to the former Prime Minister Bob Hawke.  

The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library also houses archival collections that are ancillary to research into the Hawke era, including the archival collections of former South Australian Senator Rosemary Crowley and the former Member for Adelaide, Chris Hurford.  

The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library is open by appointment only and is located at Campus City West, Hawke Building, Level 5. Browse the collection or contact Ask Library to access the collection or to organise an appointment.   

Bob Hawke collection

This Collection commemorates the achievements and legacy of the Hon Robert (Bob) James Lee Hawke AC (1929-2019), the longest serving Labor Prime Minister.  

The Collection documents Hawke's career, from ACTU Research Officer and ACTU President to his election as the Member for Wills, and his career and business interests following his resignation from Parliament. Some personal papers are also included. While the Collection does include some materials that date from Hawke’s terms as Prime Minister of Australia, most records relating to that period of his career can be found at the National Archives of Australia

The Collection includes correspondence, papers, speeches, photographs, campaign material, books, audio-visual materials, gifts and memorabilia.

Rosemary Crowley collection

This Collection documents the career of the Hon Rosemary Crowley AO.  

Elected in 1983, Crowley was the first South Australian female Australian Labor Party senator to serve in federal parliament. She served as the Minister for Family Services from 1993 to 1996 and the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women in 1993. With a strong interest in community health issues, childcare, and parent education along with her dedication to social justice and democracy. The Collection has a strong focus on public health and social issues, particularly affecting women, children and families.  

The Collection includes correspondence, papers, speeches, photographs, campaign material, books, audio-visual materials, gifts and memorabilia.

Chris Hurford collection

This Collection documents the life and career of the Hon Chris Hurford AO (1931-2020). 

Hurford studied at the London School of Economics and worked in accountancy before entering politics. He was elected as the Member for Adelaide, representing the Australian Labor Party in the 1969 federal election, holding this position until his retirement in 1987. During his time in parliament, he served as a Shadow Minister for seven years and a Minister of the Hawke Government for five years. After retiring from politics, he served as Australia’s Consul General in New York for four years. In retirement, he continued his interest in political matters, particularly Australian constitutional reform. 

This Collection was transferred to the Library from the National Archives of Australia in 2001. It includes Hurford’s personal papers from student days until his retirement from Federal Parliament, photographs, memorabilia and audio-visual material.
