Legal deposit obligations

Legal deposit obligations

Under South Australia’s Libraries Act 1982 and the 1968 Copyright Act, any publisher is required to provide a copy of every work they publish to the State Library of South Australia (SLSA) and the National Library of Australia.

Compliance for University Publishers

University-published materials that may require deposit include reports, journals, brochures, and digital-first publications.

For Adelaide University, this requirement applies only when the University (or a University department, centre, or unit) is acting as the publisher of a work. It does not apply when staff or researchers author works that are published by commercial publishers — in those cases, the legal deposit obligation sits with the publisher.

Electronic publications can be deposited through National edeposit (NED)

If the publication is published and available to the public in both print and electronic formats, electronic deposit is preferred. Deposits made through NED meet the legal deposit requirements of both the State Library of South Australia and the National Library of Australia.

The Library does not administer the legal deposit process. Responsibility rests with local areas that publish applicable materials.  For questions about what must be deposited or how to deposit please contact SLSA, who manage legal deposit. More information
