Our facilities

Our facilities

State-of-the-art research and teaching facilities

Our research and teaching are underpinned by state-of-the-art facilities and access to cutting-edge techniques, including synthetic methods, purification, and advanced analytical and computational capabilities.

Physics

Critical to Physics research, outreach, and teaching opportunities, leading-edge facilities are accessible through the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing. This includes the Braggs Building, Prescott Environmental Luminescence Laboratory, Advanced Manufacturing Facilities, Optofab Adelaide, Soft Glass and Fibre Fabrication Facility, Silica Fibre Fabrication Facility and Analytical Facilities. For major research collaborations, the Stawell Research Facility – the first underground physics laboratory of its kind in the southern hemisphere – for example, is also used.

The Planetarium at Mawson Lakes provides outreach opportunities and teaching opportunities for astronomy and space science.

Chemistry

Our research facilities include Adelaide Proteomics Centre, Adelaide Molecular Analysis and Characterisation (AMAC), the Bragg Crystallography Facility, Centre of Advanced Nanomaterials Laboratory, Analytical facilities through the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing.

Our dedicated first-year chemistry laboratory and advanced teaching labs provide students with hands on practical skills and the opportunity to use advanced characterisation equipment in-house and at Adelaide Microscopy.

Earth Sciences

Our ultra-modern Mawson Analytical Spectrometry Services (MASS) facilities comprise of three specialised, integrated facilities, available for commercial use: Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (TIMS), Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) and Organic Molecular Analyses & Characterisation (OMAC) Facilities.

Specific earth sciences teaching spaces, the renowned Tate Museum and a new Geomodelling lab provide outstanding learning environments for future geoscientists and field trips utilise the geological wonders of South Australia, New Zealand and Oman for teaching.

Environmental Sciences

Our research facilities include Project Live which use innovative virtual and augmented reality experience to view environmental science projects from a new perspective.

Aside from campus facilities, environmental science students go outside the classrooms and engage with physical South Australian environments such as national parks, coastlines, and the Museum of Discovery (MOD).
