Explore ways to engage with the School of Communication, Media and Journalism

Industry and community collaborations are integral to the School of Communication, Media and Journalism, allowing our students to graduate with hands-on skills, networks, and professional experiences that will give them a jump-start in their career. There are many ways to engage with tomorrow’s communicators, through placements and internships, guest lectures, collaborative research, and more. Our staff are creative practitioners and researchers informing cutting-edge policy and practice. Let’s write the next chapter together.

The School of Communication, Media and Journalism is also home to Realities Extended, a transformational initiative delivering cutting-edge immersive technology and research services to industry partners. Realities Extended covers all aspects of the development pipelines associated with Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, and also delivers web-based 3D and 2D content.

Past projects include:

  • Sound Escape: Focussing on movement rehabilitation and pain distraction for patients at the Northern Pain Rehabilitation Clinic, this cutting-edge VR music interaction system was designed to give audible feedback on therapy movements, while simultaneously providing relief from the clinical settings that is often stressful for patients.
  • The Lunar Environment Rover and Situational Awareness System: pilot a rover on the surface of the moon - and feel every bump. This project brought together different parts of the University from Space, Education, Psychology, Engineering, and Architecture.
  • AES REBOA: Training field medics to perform a REBOA procedure (Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta), a lifesaving tool to support haemorrhage control in injured patients. Funded by AES (Artificial Environment Simulations), this project pushes the boundaries of simulated surgical training.
  • Built for the 100-year anniversary of Scotch College, a Virtual Reality experience accurately recreated one of the school’s most beautiful historical buildings.
  • A fully immersive museum experience, where real world pieces of history enter the virtual world.
  • And many more.

Realities Extended is led by Senior Lecturer Steve Cook, and his expert team: Lead Developer Ethan Schoemaker, Technical Artist Tristan Castle, and Graphics & Engine Tools Developer Matthew Hall.
