Our research

Our research - School of Agriculture, Food and Wine

Award-winning research advancing health, biodiversity and biotechnology

Our research addresses pressing challenges in biodiversity conservation, disease, genetics and biotechnology. We work with partners to deliver discoveries that improve health, protect ecosystems and develop new technologies.

DNA and Forensic Biology

We use ancient and modern DNA to trace evolutionary change, assess impacts on species, and apply forensic genomics to human remains, informing conservation, defence, law enforcement and humanitarian work.

Wildlife Conservation

Our scientists apply ecological, genetic and modelling approaches to help conserve species and manage biodiversity. We study species through to ecosystems, monitor population change and develop strategies for resilience in a changing climate.

Marine and Freshwater Research

We explore freshwater, estuarine and marine ecosystems, investigating conservation and restoration, climate change, and biodiversity. Our work informs sustainable fisheries management, environmental conservation and engages with community to achieve healthy aquatic environments.

Infectious Diseases

We investigate major human and animal pathogens using genomic tools, CRISPR screening and advanced microscopy. Our research develops vaccines and treatments, tackling global challenges like malaria, influenza and emerging diseases.

Biotechnology

Harnessing biology to deliver new solutions in agriculture, health and industry. We advance synthetic biology, structural biology, imaging approaches and biosensors as transformative technologies for future industries.

Citizen Science

We engage with schools and community to generate data that helps identify new species, understand biology and distribution of organisms and undertake environmental restoration.

Chronic Diseases

We investigate the key molecular drivers and potential treatments for chronic neurological and metabolic diseases as well as cancers using genomic tools, proteomics and drug screens.

Research centres

Research Centre for Infectious Diseases

The Research Centre for Infectious Diseases (RCID) unites leading scientists investigating infectious disease pathogenesis (bacteriology, virology, parasitology) and translates into vaccine development and drug discovery.

Centre of Light for Life

The Centre of Light for Life pioneers novel optical imaging technologies, advancing multidisciplinary research in biology, health and the environment, with state-of-the-art laboratories at Adelaide’s Molecular Life Sciences building.

Engage with us

We collaborate with industry, government and research organisations to translate discovery into outcomes for society and the environment. Engagement includes research partnerships, training, placements and knowledge exchange.
