Fieldwork is an essential part of research and education within the School of Biological Sciences, offering students and researchers opportunities to study ecosystems firsthand across diverse South Australian landscapes.
The Coobowie Marine Research Station on Yorke Peninsula provides an ideal base for studying coastal, marine and estuarine environments. With dedicated teaching and lab facilities, Coobowie supports field camps in marine biology and ecology, allowing students to investigate real-world environmental challenges through exploration, teamwork and research.
On Kangaroo Island, the Flinders-Baudin Research Centre (jointly managed with the Department for Environment and Water) hosts world-leading studies on vertebrate ecology, conservation, and post-fire recovery. Its facilities accommodate teaching groups and long-term environmental research within Flinders Chase National Park.
In South Australia’s arid zone, the Koonamore Vegetation Reserve is one of the world’s longest-running ecosystem monitoring sites. Established in 1926, it continues to provide invaluable insights into arid ecology, vegetation recovery and long-term environmental change.
Together, these field stations create living laboratories for discovery, connecting students and scientists to environments from coast to desert, and strengthening our understanding of biodiversity, conservation and ecological resilience.
