Adelaide University signs agreement with Vietnam for academic scholarships

Adelaide University has strengthened its ties with Vietnam, signing an agreement to deliver more collaborative research opportunities and build stronger connections with Southeast Asia.

The Memorandum of Sponsor Agreement (MoA) gives Vietnamese academics the opportunity to secure Adelaide University PhD scholarships as part of a training scheme by the Vietnamese Government to boost the qualifications, research capability and teaching quality of its higher education lecturers.

The scholarships are jointly funded by Adelaide University and the Vietnamese Government.

“We are honoured to partner with Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) on this important initiative and contribute to Vietnam’s higher education transformation agenda,” said Professor Jessica Gallagher, Deputy Vice Chancellor - International and External Engagement at Adelaide University.

“Adelaide University is a global leader in research and by offering this scholarship program, we can continue to build strong partnerships in Southeast Asia, while supporting Vietnam’s national goal of developing a high-quality academic workforce for the future.”

Adelaide University already partners with a number of Vietnamese institutions to deliver research in areas of shared interest, including artificial intelligence, digital technologies, clean energy, engineering, health and climate resilience.

This MoA formalises Adelaide University's commitment to capacity building in Vietnam, while supporting ongoing research and collaboration between Australia and Vietnam

“It opens the door to more international collaboration in research, allowing Adelaide University to play a major role in finding possible solutions to many of the shared global challenges facing the world today,” said Professor Gallagher.

The MoA was exchanged by Adelaide University’s Pro Vice Chancellor for Global Partnerships, Lori Hocking, at a ceremony in Hanoi on December 11. Federal Education Minister Jason Clare was in attendance, along with Vietnam’s Education and Training Minister, Nguyễn Kim Sơn and MOET’s Director of International Cooperation, Dr Pham Thu Thuy.

The new round of scholars will be announced in 2026 after Adelaide University has opened its doors in January.
