Profile of Carolyn Semmler

About me

I'm a cognitive scientist, a field that draws together linguistics, philosophy, mathematics, computer science and psychology.  I'm a balanced academic (40/40/20) conducting research and teaching at the nexus between human behaviour and technology. My research is translational and I teach the principles of ethical and safe development of technical innovation to bring new ways of living and working with technology - and work with the Australian Institute for Machine Learning. Through teaching and collaborative interdisciplinary research, I discover, design and create novel theory and methods to help solve societal challenges. I collaborate with the people who apply the research first – gaining perspective and context so that the solutions are rapidly and effectively translated.

Maconochie Prize (2004) APS College of Forensic Psychologists
Leoni Warne Memorial Prize (2021) Department of Defence

I started out in research at Flinders University, earning my PhD from the School of Psychology in 2004. My academic career then continued with an appointment to the University of Adelaide in 2007 - with a continuing position in 2011. I was promoted to Professor of Psychology in 2024 in the University of Adelaide and now I am a Professor at Adelaide University. I've worked across many different roles and collaborated with Industry leading teams in competitively funded defence research, category 1 funding (ARC) and contract research.

I teach Contemporary Issues 1 (Honours Elective) and Understanding Individuals and Behaviour (PSYC1001)

Media experience
I've been involved in translation of science and research into the media for a long time (20 years), appearing on the ABC, national news radio and in traditional print media + pod casts. I've also consulted to documentary and film makers about topics including eyewitness memory, mood and emotion and the impact of technology on human judgment and decision making.
